Why a GFCI Keeps Tripping

A GFCI trips when it detects current taking an unintended path. Sometimes the cause is a wet appliance. Sometimes it is damaged wiring. Sometimes the device itself is worn out. The important part is not to treat the reset button like a game-show buzzer.

What a GFCI is watching

A ground-fault circuit interrupter compares current leaving on the hot conductor with current returning on the neutral. If the difference exceeds its trip threshold, it opens the circuit quickly. That imbalance can be caused by leakage through a person, moisture, damaged insulation, faulty equipment, or certain wiring errors.

Start by unplugging loads

Unplug everything supplied by the GFCI and any known downstream receptacles, then reset it. If it holds, reconnect devices one at a time. A trip that follows one appliance is useful evidence that the appliance or its cord may be the issue.

Look for moisture

Outdoor equipment, refrigerators in damp areas, sump equipment, bathroom devices, extension cords, and weather-exposed receptacles can develop leakage when wet. Allow equipment to dry only when it is safe to do so and inspect for damaged seals, covers, cords, and enclosures.

If it trips with nothing plugged in

That shifts suspicion toward the GFCI device, downstream wiring, a permanently connected load, or a wiring error. Incorrect line/load connections, neutral-to-ground contact downstream, damaged cable, and moisture in boxes can all cause trouble.

Do not defeat the protection

Replacing a GFCI with a standard receptacle just to stop nuisance trips removes the safety feature without fixing the problem. If the location requires GFCI protection, the solution is to diagnose the cause while maintaining that protection.

Repeated tripping is information. Use it. A protection device that keeps opening is telling you to find the leakage or fault, not to get better at pressing RESET.

When professional testing makes sense

If the GFCI trips with all portable loads removed, if there is evidence of water intrusion or damaged wiring, or if you are not comfortable separating line and load conductors with the circuit de-energized, a qualified electrician can test insulation, leakage, device condition, and circuit wiring safely.
